Running a Small case 4.10 with an eta motor?

My friend bought a 85 318 for a DD to keep miles on his other car down, but the m10 is about to go. He found ryans old eta motor and tranny for 200 bucks, but doesnt know if the small case diff will handle the torque. Should my friend go ahead and get a large case diff? It wont see any track abuse, just normal driving to work and whatnot.

swap eta in, but why?

m42 + light early 318 sounds pretty good.

killer, he's saying the 4.10 would be fucking short as hell with the eta. people talk about 3.73 being too short to drive really, so what's a 4.10 going to be like?
etas need like 2.93, 3.25 etc. so add that cost (of a suitable diff, not yours) to the cost of the swap. (thanks James, forgot about that)

Hmmm. M42 is light. Good mpg. Better power. And suited for use with the 4.10 small case. What's the hold up?

It will work, just don't do any hard starts with it and it should be okay.

however keep what I said in mind about the gearing.

4.10 will be fun as hell in town below 40mph, but anything over that you have no top end... trust me I ran a 3.73 on my automatic eta before I swapped to manual and it had no freeway passing power at all.

I now run a 3.25LSD and I have lots of power and a good amount of revrange to use

ya.....I have a 3.73 in my super eta, I mean ya its fun from about 0-50pmh but after then it just lacks power, and i do find myself starting in second gear alot just because 1st is almost useless!

But to answer the question yes it will work!
