6/83 grey market 323i.. mtech I S50 5-lug

I've actually had it for a little while, but haven't really started working on it until now. This thread is not likely to contain any high-quality pictures until I invest in a camera that can take them, and learn how to use it.

It's an automatic, bone-stock 6/83 323i with less than 70K miles. It first lived in Germany and then immigrated to Lebanon in the mid '80s, transferring to the States sometime after that via Hardy&Beck, who did the federalization work. I am probably the third owner, but bought it from the original owner's son. supposedly. theoretically. I hope.

first pics from when I found it:

and when I brought it home:

and what the previous owner dropped off a few days later:

He claims that he will eventually return with a set of Alpinas.

Current problems:
- stood for a decade; everything rubber is shot
- kinda bad-looking rust under the right corner of the windshield
- paint's not great, touched up with an off-color spray can in places
- alternator doesn't charge
- automatic
- pisses every fluid ever (I'll be amazed if I ever make one of these that doesn't start off with "pisses every fluid ever" in it somewhere. It's a curse.)

short-term plans:
- timing belt/water pump/thermostat/reinsert various engine juices
- control arms, CABs
- dogleg, lightweight flywheel, Most Important Pedal
- GC coils, shortened housings
- iX/camaro Bilstein sports
- IE camber plates
- Bav Auto sway bars (I think? they're red..)
- euro smileys/grills
- some other neat euro bits I've been sitting on

long-term plans:
- fresh AWI
- M-technik I bodystuff
- M106 from a 745i, Megasquirt management

Stay tuned! Work begins after this weekend's Lemons race, during which I definitely won't burn out and not want to touch cars for a few months.

Inspiration pic:

I ordered the rest of the parts I need to get the car up and running, and figured out a due date for the car to be functional - May 10th, Buttonwillow Raceway.

More parts coming:
- Lemforder control arms
- M3 CABs
- manual pedal box and all the necessary manual swap stuff
- e36 rack, tie rods
- driveshaft
- 14.5lb flywheel
- whole bunch of condor stuff

The plan this weekend is to replace the timing belt and water pump, install the ground control stuff and sway bars, and get started on the manual swap. In theory.

Cool, another 323 in Cali. I don't know if it's any inspiration but here's a pic of mine.

On a Hartge H26 motor is produced 190hp. Is that the goal for you build? I see you like Hartge and Alpina. So witch one do you like more? I'm interested in this project to the up dates.

I can't decide which one I like more. Currently concentrating on resurrecting it, then we can figure out the motor direction.. I'd like to use the crank and the head, at least, and I have an eta block sitting around.

Anyway, got the water pump and timing belt changed out. The water pump had like 4mm of axial play, it was ridiculous, no wonder all the engine juices came out. Currently working on adapting the struts for ground controls..

also I couldn't resist, have a crappy teaser

Congrats/welcome back to the fold kronus!
Looks very clean. Also, there is just something much more about a car with a unique story.

It's Zender. I have the front as well, but it needs some fiberglass.

Anyway, spent the whole weekend working on it.. turns out having a press makes control arms and CABS easy! For future reference, yes you can press the old CA bushing out using the new one, it works great.

Photos tonight. Here's a euro M20 motor mount arm:
